Outer Banks Golf: The Currituck Club

Presented By Katherine Schuster

If you and your loved ones are traveling to the northern parts of the Historic Outer Banks from the quaint town of Duck (where the now famous Duck Donuts originated) all the way up to Carova (where the Wild Mustangs roam free along the pristine sandy beaches) this is your friendly reminder to bring your golf clubs because the birdies are chirping and the Eagles are soaring at the challenging links of The Currituck Club.

Katherine’s Personal View of the Course

The Currituck Club is a higher end/ upscale public country club and is one of the more widely known golf courses on the Outer Banks. It is conveniently located ten miles North of the Twiddy and Company office in Duck and just 6 miles south of the Corolla office. Once you arrive on property make sure you drop off your golf bag at the bag drop before you park your car.

Whether you are a scratch golfer or a 20+ handicapper the Currituck Club has fun for all. On the property there is a large practice putting green with bent grass, a small practice bunker, and a large driving range. The course is a par 72 which consists of 18 championship style holes with bent grass greens and bermuda fairways that were designed by the legendary award-winning designer Rees Jones back in 1996.

The Currituck Club tests every golfer regardless of their skill level. Rees Jones did a fantastic job developing the course with the lay of the land where mother nature can be your biggest challenge. One day you can be having a 5 iron into a par 5 feeling like you finally have this game figured out with a long walk with a putter in your hand imagining how you have a great look at eagle ahead of you, and the very next day you can be on that same exact hole you can be needing a 3 wood then 5 iron into the green praying that you can make a par. If you are making birdies on this golf course then you are doing something right. If you are not making as many “circles”- birdies- as you are hoping, don’t fear and just look up because there is a very high chance that you will see some incredible coastal wildlife including ospreys, geese, and magnificent soaring eagles while you are having the time of your life.

Another thing that the Currituck Club has to offer are some incredible picturesque views that you will be showing your friends back home. Rees Jones not only made every hole picture perfect with the green grass and the white bunkers perfectly placed to make the course both challenging and aesthetically pleasing, but he also put 6 holes parallel to the Currituck Sound which is something that not too many courses have.

The Currituck Club is a great place to have a friendly competition with your friends. The last time I played the Currituck Club before writing this blog I played a little two vs two match with a few of my friends from high school and we had a wonderful time, shared some laughs, had great trash talk and made memories that will last a lifetime.

After your round make sure to stop by the pro shop before you leave and grab some sweet Currituck Club swag like a polo or divot tool that you can rock at your home course. You may want to grab a beverage or a meal at The Hunt Club Tavern that boasts an appetizing menu. There are so many fun things to do and see while in the northern part of the Outer Banks! I hope you enjoy your time on this sand bar of ours and come back soon! I would love to hear your reviews after playing some of the local golf courses that I wrote about this summer. Stay safe and have fun.
