Experience the Solar Eclipse on the Outer Banks
As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming solar eclipse happening on Monday, April 8; the Outer Banks is a wonderful location to witness this astronomical marvel. While the Outer Banks is not on the direct path, our coastal paradise offers expansive skies, an uninterrupted horizon, and an ideal vantage point for experiencing the wonder of a solar eclipse.
Solar eclipses happen when the sun, moon, and Earth align. The moon moves between Earth and the sun, momentarily blocking sunlight and creating a shadow on Earth. During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely covers the sun, while a partial solar eclipse only obscures part of it.
Even though the Outer Banks is not directly on the path, experts estimate that you will be able to witness around 75% coverage of the sun.
On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse graced the skies over the Outer Banks, and the region, from Corolla to Ocracoke, became a hotspot for eclipse enthusiasts eager to experience the sun’s temporary disappearance behind the moon. On May 10, 1994, a partial solar eclipse offered a glimpse of the sun partially obscured by the moon’s shadow, which sounds similar to what we’ll experience across the Outer Banks on Monday, April 8th.
If you would like to experience the solar eclipse on the Outer Banks but are not physically here, we invite you to tune into the Twiddy & Company Beach Webcam. Our Webcam is always live and offers an escape where you can gain insight into our coastline’s beauty and natural appeal. Whether the beach is busy with sunbathers, surfers, shell-collectors, and children splashing in the shoreline or empty on a cold winter day, our webcam captures it all!
While witnessing a solar eclipse is a breathtaking experience, it’s crucial to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. According to NASA, failing to take proper precautions can result in severe eye injury. Check out this article on eye safety during a solar eclipse for more information.
During the Solar Eclipse, embrace the experience and capture the moment. Take a moment to reflect and observe the wonder of the eclipse. Bring your camera or phone to capture images of the viewing on the Outer Banks or your hometown, and send your favorite photos to our Twiddy & Company Facebook or Instagram page!
When there isn’t a solar eclipse, the Outer Banks offers some of the darkest skies on the East Coast. It can be an exceptional experience due to dark night skies that have limited light pollution. Check out this article for our favorite ways to stargaze on the Outer Banks.
