Outer Banks Golf: Duck Woods Country Club

Presented By Katherine Schuster

Where it all began

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is truly a very special place. These beaches are filled with rich history and everlasting memories that you and your family will cherish for a lifetime. I was born and raised on this beautiful sandbar and I am so blessed to be able to call this place my home. Obviously, we all have fond memories of the places we grew up. However, there is one place in particular on the Outer Banks that holds a very special place in my heart and that place is Duck Woods Country Club.

Duck Woods is where my golfing journey began. Duck Woods is where my dad took me to the driving range after watching the Inaugural Drive Chip and Putt back in 2014. That same driving range is where I spent countless hours determined to fine-tune my craft, where every 3 ft putt I had was to win the US Open, countless putting contests, chipping contests, closest to the pin contests. It is where my dream of playing Division One Golf at Clemson University came to be, and it is where I had my first ever birdie on Hole 3 when I was 11 years old.

There are so many memories to be made with your family on the golf course during your summer vacation on the Outer Banks. What better place to make them than at Duck Woods?

Katherine’s Personal View of the Course

Duck Woods is a semi-private Country Club located in Southern Shores, North Carolina. Once you arrive on the property you will be greeted by a friendly member of the cart crew (I recommend asking them what their favorite hole is- because they have played the course a few times and they know you are in for a real treat). Once your clubs are loaded on your cart, head down the hill and make your way into the pro shop where you will be welcomed by some more friendly faces and they will provide you with first-class service. If PGA Head Professional, Scott Wasco is in his office make sure to stop in and say, hello!

Lastly, the pro shop is filled with a wide selection of sweet Outer Banks Memorabilia. As well as, some Duck Woods swag for purchase that you can rock the next time playing your home golf course.

Duck Woods is a true test of character. I will admit that some local knowledge is definitely helpful while playing this fun track. Long ball hitters may have a slight advantage or disadvantage depending on the lines that you take off the tee. In fact, I am known as the girl who tries to aim over the two tall pine trees on hole 7 (par 5) from the tips.

Whether you are a scratch golfer or 20+ handicapper you are in for a real treat… I promise! You are going to experience every single emotion on the course from anger to pure joy in a matter of seconds. There might be moments where you are questioning why you decided to pick up the club in the first place to hitting that one ESPN top 10 shot that keeps you coming back the next day making you feel like you are on top of the world.

If you can make it through all 18 holes without losing a single golf ball then “congratulations!” that deserves a pat on the shoulder! If you are like most of us and you lose a few- that is a-okay! You will still have a ton of fun. Just make sure you pack a few extra golf balls in your bag as well as a ball retriever.

Duck Woods Country Club is a par 72 golf course with bent grass greens and Bermuda fairways/rough. The speed of the greens obviously changes from day to day. However, since bent grass thrives in a cooler climate expect the greens to be a little slower in the summer compared to the fall when they are at their best (but that is all courses on the Outer Banks). On the property, there are 18 holes that keep you on your toes and can’t help but bring a big smile to your face. Most holes are intertwined with small lakes, ponds, and canals. With that being said you are sure to see some beautiful wildlife while on the course such as turtles, otters, and all kinds of birds including some wood ducks, deer, muskrats, and the occasional fox.

Each nine brings you back to the clubhouse so you can stop inside and grab some refreshments and a snack while at the turn. I love the front nine at Duck Woods. Holes 2,6,7 are my personal favorites. However, my absolute favorite is Hole 16 because that hole is a beast. Don’t worry there is no water on this hole, it’s just plain long. Back in the day, it used to be a monstrous par 4- now it is a par 5 which plays a little easier and I have gained a little distance since I was 10.

Duck Woods back nine is home to the “Duck Trap” which is the Outer Banks version of the famous “Bear Trap” on PGA National in West Palm Beach, Florida. Yes- I have gone through the Bear Trap before in a tournament. I have to say that the Duck Trap will get the heart rate pumping just like the Bear Trap.

Once you make your birdie putt on the 18th hole. You can make your way to the second floor of the clubhouse where the Duck Woods Bistro is located. Where you can enjoy sharing your day with your buddies or loved ones over a nice cooked lunch or dinner. Another great spot to hang out after the round is near an awesome fire pit that my dad built that is located near the 9th green. Where you can relax and soak in all the amazing memories that you made at Duck Woods and on the Outer Banks.
