Our Favorite Activities for you to do on your next family vacation!

The Outer Banks is calling! When planning your next family vacation to the Outer Banks, you may want to see what activities you can do that are free or affordable. We asked our Twiddy team for their favorite things to do, so be sure to check out all of our favorite local spots! 

Things you can do anywhere along the Outer Banks

Watch the sunrise and the sunset! There are many locations on the Outer Banks where you can witness a beautiful sunrise or sunset! Check out our favorites here.

Relax by the beach and soak up all of the sunshine! The Outer Banks has numerous public beach access points, offering free parking for a hassle-free day by the ocean.

Have a seashell hunt! Give points for different types and sizes and see who wins!

On a clear night, take your family and spend some time stargazing identifying the constellations, planets and stars. Check to see if there are any extra special happening going on; such as meteor showers, blood moons, Northern Lights. We recommend Night Sky as a helpful stargazer app!

Explore the 5 Outer Banks Lighthouses! From Corolla to Ocracoke Island, there are five different lighthouses, each distinctly different from the others.

Visit a Farmer’s Market! It’s a great way to spend a sunny morning with your family and supporting local businesses. There’s an OBX farmer’s market nearby, no matter which Outer Banks town you stay in.

4×4 Beach / Corolla

🌳 Currituck Banks Coastal Estuarine Reserve

This 1.5 mile trail at the very north end of Corolla offers scenic views of the maritime forest and of the Currituck Sound. Be on the lookout for wildlife, including the Corolla Wild Horses!

🛝 Historic Corolla Park 

This park offers a perfect blend of history, nature, and family fun, with attractions like the beautifully preserved Whalehead Club, the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, and the Currituck Maritime Museum. Visitors can explore the rich coastal heritage, stroll the scenic waterfront, and let little ones enjoy the playground—all in one stunning location. Local Tip: this location is a perfect spot for family photos!

Corolla Village 

This quaint village is filled with lots small-town charm. Wander through local shops and soak in the relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Duck

🌳 Duck Town Boardwalk is one of the best spots to catch a sunset. The almost mile long boardwalk features restaurants, shops and attractions throughout the village of Duck. 

☀️ The Town of Duck offers a host of events throughout the summer. From weekly concerts, meeting a rescued Banker horse, to morning yoga classes, check out their schedule here

🚲 If you can bring your own bike, Duck is a great place to ride them around on neighborhood roads or on the sidewalk.

Kill Devil Hills

✈️ Wright Brothers Monument 

Discover where the Wright Brothers made history with the First Flight! This National Memorial, which has a parking fee, is filled with history of their successful flight in 1903. To go for free, park at Aviation Park nearby and walk over.

🛝 Meekins Field 

This park includes a splash pad, playgrounds, pickleball/tennis courts. The Splash Pad is the perfect spot to allow your little ones to cool off on a hot day!

🌳 Run Hill State Natural Area 

A hidden gem of Kill Devil Hills! This Nature preserve offers hiking, dunes, and a course for disc golf.

⛳️ Casey R. Logan Disc Golf Course 

The Casey R. Logan Disc Golf Course is an 18 hole course, with amateur and professional fairways. It is located at 120 Veterans Drive, off Colington Road.

Nags Head

🌳 Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve and Jockey’s Ridge

Nags Head offers two unique trails to explore the outdoors at! Jockey’s Ridge State Park offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Albemarle Sound atop the tallest sand dune on the East Coast. Local Tip: bring a boogie-board so that you can ride down the dunes! Or, sign up for a hang gliding lesson with Kitty Hawk Kites! If you’re looking for more adventure, hike through Nags Head Woods, one of the largest maritime forests on the East Coast.

🛝Dowdy Park 

Dowdy Park offers 5 acres of recreation for all ages. With an Amphitheater, basketball court, Bocce Ball Court, a Fitness Trail, a Pickleball Court, playground and restrooms. They also have a Farmer’s Market June-August on each Thursday with local goodies.

🎣 Catch of the day 

Head to a marina, Pirate’s Cove or Oregon Inlet, around 4pm and watch fisherman bring in their fresh catch of the day! You can eat dinner at Blue Water Grill or Sea Chef, and admire the marina views. 

🐟 Jennette’s Pier 

Inside of Jennette’s Pier, there are Roanoke Island Aquarium exhibits that are free. Pay a small fee to walk on the 1,000 foot long pier and enjoy stunning ocean views and see what everyone is catching. 

Further South

🛍️ Downtown Manteo 

Explore charming Downtown Manteo! Pop into boutiques and bookshops, eat at delicious local restaurants and coffee shops, and check out the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. For a fee, enter into Roanoke Island Festival Park and climb aboard the Elizabeth II ship and see what the 16th century was like on Roanoke Island.

🦆 Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Spanning over 5,000 acres on the Outer Banks, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and is one of the best birding spots in North Carolina. With diverse habitats and a scenic trail from the visitor center, it offers a prime opportunity to spot wintering waterfowl and wading birds year-round.

⛴️ Ride the Ferry to Ocracoke!

Ocracoke Village, accessible by ferry only, is a charming coastal town with a rich history and a laid-back atmosphere. For our favorite things to do in Ocracoke, check out our day trip guide. On your way there, enjoy the scenic coastal drive down NC-12 and plan to make a stop at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, located right beside the ferry docks.
