Night Fishing with Northern Lights, Photo by Nick

2024 was the year for seeing the Northern Lights on the Outer Banks! This rare treat happened in October when a geomagnetic storm triggered northern lights all across the United States. Check out Edward’s Beach Report, where he shares more about the Aurora Borealis and how back in the 1970’s the Outer Banks had them for a week.

The Outer Banks is one of the best places for stargazing on the entire east coast. Check out this blog post for more information on seeing the Milky Way, shooting stars, and meteor showers on the Outer Banks.

Morning Sunrise, photo by Destiny

There’s nothing quite like waking up to an ocean sunrise. Every time you wake up early to catch it, you’re reminded—it’s always worth it. While you’re on vacation, check out our OBX Tide Charts to see what time the sun will rise. Pro Tip: Plan to get to get to the beach 10-15 minutes before the sun rises to witness a spectacular view.

Want to watch the sunrise year-round? Tune into our Live Beach Cam every morning to watch the sunrise from the Outer Banks.

First in Flight – Pup Edition, photo by Erin

How cute is this pup visiting The Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills? Both Wilbur and Orville Wright had dogs, one named “Flyer” and one named “Scipio”. They would have loved this photo!

Sunset in Duck, photo by Tracey

Almost every evening on the Outer Banks, our evening sky turns into a beautiful sunset. There are many great places to catch the sunset during your Outer Banks Vacation, including the Duck Boardwalk or Whalehead in Corolla.
