7 Reasons to Spend Spring Break on the Outer Banks

Morning Alarms Are Optional

Spending Spring Break on the Outer Banks is always a great idea! With beach weather just around the corner, a spring getaway on the OBX is an ideal way to relax and reconnect with family after the long winter. Get a taste of summer on the OBX as a refresh before the hustle and bustle of the end of the school year. We’re sharing our top seven reasons to spend your spring break on the OBX.

family friendly spring break

1 – The Outer Banks is Family Friendly

Far from the college Spring Break party scene, the Outer Banks is a family-friendly Spring Break destination. Reconnect with loved ones in a laid-back beach atmosphere. Kick back and play board games at your beach house, or venture out to a super chill local OBX brewery to sample what’s on tap.

2 – The OBX is a Nearby Spring Break Destination

The Outer Banks is within driving distance of many areas on the east coast. Imagine packing up the car at home and then sticking your toes in the sand several hours later. Be sure to pack your flip-flops toward the top of your luggage.

3 – Uncrowded Beaches During Spring Break

Beautiful, uncrowded beaches can be found along the Outer Banks during Spring Break. Get up early to watch the sunrise, and then go shelling on the beach, in search of the perfect Outer Banks souvenir.

4 – Nice Weather

In general, spring weather on the Outer Banks is mild, not too hot, and not too cold. It is not uncommon to experience an 80-degree sunny beach day during Spring Break. High-temperature averages during Spring Break are normally in the mid-to-high-60s, ideal for beachcombing or sightseeing during the day.

Wright Brothers Spring Break

5 – Learn About the Outer Banks’ Rich History

When thinking about OBX history, the Wright Brothers or the infamous pirate Blackbeard may be the first that come to mind. But there are countless additional stories that contribute to the rich history of the Outer Banks. From Richard Etheridge, the first black man to lead a crew in the U.S. Lifesaving Service, to The Lost Colony, the story of the mysterious disappearance of the first English settlement, to countless storm stories from hurricanes throughout the years, the Outer Banks has no shortage of interesting people and events to learn about.

6 – OBX Easter Events

Spring has sprung and local events are in full swing. Flowers at the Elizabethan Gardens are in full bloom and serve as the perfect backdrop for an easter egg hunt. If you’re looking for the Easter Bunny and an egg hunt, head to Kitty Hawk Kites’ Easter Eggstravaganza. Free kite flying lessons at Jockey’s Ridge are held the same weekend as part of the Fly Into Spring Kite Festival

7 – Take a Day Trip to Ocracoke Island

Accessible by ferry only, Ocracoke is a magical island at the southern tip of the OBX. The drive from the northern Outer Banks to the ferry dock is a scenic one, featuring beautiful natural landscapes and several OBX lighthouses. Ferry wait times are much shorter during Spring Break than during the busier summer months. Once you make it to Ocracoke, don’t miss the stops on our Day Trip to Ocracoke itinerary.
