Planning an OBX Wedding under the Stars at Constellation

Julie Dreelin Photographer

After visiting the Outer Banks and vacationing here for many years, Ashley and Frankie knew this special place would be the perfect destination wedding for them.

As they began searching for properties, they knew they needed a larger, special event home, as their bridal party consisted of 30 people. All in all, hosting a full wedding week on the Outer Banks ended up being much more affordable than just a single-day event at comparable venues back home in New Jersey. Plus, many homes are pet-friendly, which was a must for their two pups who needed to attend the special day!

The Planning Process

From the beginning, Ashley said that working with Twiddy & Company was a seamless process for them. They found Constellation (KD1213) online and booked the property. They corresponded with our Special Events team, who assisted every step of the way. Six months before their wedding week, they were able to tour the property, which was a game-changer as they were planning how to maximize their amenities in the house. Ashley appreciated the travel insurance option, which was a major plus for her as coverage included a Special Event Liability Insurance Policy

The unique coastal environment of the Outer Banks means the weather can be unpredictable. A storm was happening before Ashley and her family got here, but the Twiddy team was on-site right away, making sure they had no worries.

While hosting a wedding at a special event home requires additional planning compared to a traditional wedding, Ashley and Frankie enjoyed the creative freedom they were allowed. They worked with a team of amazing local Outer Banks vendors to fully customize their wedding day, including tent sizes and tablecloth settings.

Hosting a Wedding Week

By having a whole week as opposed to a one-day event, Ashley and her bridal party were able to fully enjoy all that the Outer Banks and the vacation rental had to offer. They had about 60 people stay each night in the house, and a total of 135 people came to their wedding. For those who didn’t stay overnight at the house, they rented nearby properties or hotel rooms. The home has a very large driveway that is easily able to accommodate people driving and parking at the property.

They had different themed nights, including a Japanese-inspired meal, had an epic movie night in the home theater, rented jeeps and had a 4×4 Beach adventure. After the wedding ceremony on Friday, they had a morning-after breakfast at the nearby restaurant, Stack-em-High, and had plenty of time to pack up before the Sunday checkout.

Sought-after amenities

Ashley and Frankie were impressed by the property for all the amenities that truly WOW-ed their guests. Level Three’s commercial kitchen had a large fridge and plenty of counter space, and level three also has a caterer’s kitchen so that the private chef can have the space for what they need to do.

They also loved the Level One’s kitchen, which has a window to open your own tiki bar, steps from the private pool. And, having an elevator was a huge help for both the vendors and the guests. And, the property is steps from the beach with a private gazebo and walkway. You don’t need to leave the house at all, as it includes an arcade, theater, and private pool and hot tub.

Memories that last a lifetime

Ashley and Frankie recommend Constellation to couples considering getting married on the Outer Banks, as it’s a property that you dream of. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get married in a large, oceanfront home, where the memories will last a lifetime. Even three years after they got married, friends and family still reminisce about Ashley and Frankie’s special day. They hope to come back soon for an anniversary trip!

On advice for other couples planning their Outer Banks wedding, Ashley recommends that the couples take their time and really enjoy the journey – it goes by really fast. Ashley recommends hiring a day-of coordinator; they used Heart of Harlow, as you don’t want your guests to do the heavy lifting. A local planner will be familiar with the area and have worked in these event homes. They had a photographer and videographer for the ceremony, but Ashley wishes they had hired them during the week as well, so that they could have captured more of the wedding week fun. She also suggested that if the majority of your bridal party will be there, you could plan the bachelorette and bachelor activities for one of the days that you’re there for the wedding week.
