Forty years of guiding a business along takes a lot of passion, patience, and resilience. We’ve managed to stay growth-minded and innovative through a sea of changes on the competitive landscape and will continue to do so with the arrival of national and online chains along the Outer Banks. Competition is a good thing and brings benefits to us all–businesses and customers alike. As we grow, we always wonder about the risk of losing touch with what made us and we work to make sure we balance evolution to the cultural foundations of 1978.
When we have a question of culture, it’s easy to replay some of our founder’s most common sayings in our mind that we have heard so many times. It’s good to have them close at hand as a kind of cultural compass as we make decisions and choices about what kind of company we want to be over the next forty years.
- Don’t just get it done, get it done right.

Doug and Sharon are still active in the business today (this morning Sharon is in the Corolla office measuring tables and meeting with interior designers). They’ve done a series of videos, mainly against their will, to share a few of the ideas that have guided them as they built the business that we have enjoyed as much as anyone. Happily, they’d point out that we had three folks celebrate twenty years at Twiddy & Company just this past week so our memories remain firmly rooted in where we came from and just how far we’ve come.
