2018’s Best OBX Halloween Celebrations

Let’s get spooky! The crisp fall weather has finally arrived, which means Halloween is right around the corner. This year’s Outer Banks Halloween celebrations range from family-friendly costume parties to creepy adults-only scare fests. Along with the tricks, you can also find festive Halloween treats to satisfy your sweet tooth.

We’ve rounded up a variety of spooktacular events happening on the Outer Banks this Halloween season.

1. Trick or Treat Under the Sea at North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island – Manteo

Date: Wednesday, October 24th, and Thursday, October 25th

Time: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Best For: Family Fun

It’s the monster mash and it’s a graveyard smash at the OBX aquarium for their 14th annual spooky celebration. Top to bottom, the aquarium is decorated for Halloween. Dance with zombies. Visit with the ghosts in the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Wear your costume and be sure your kids bring their trick or treat buckets for a ghoulishly good time.

2. Creepy in Corolla – Whalehead in Historic Corolla

Date: Wednesday, October 31st

Time: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Best For: Family Fun

Shiver me timbers! Historic Corolla Village gets creepy on Halloween night. Trick or treaters can visit the Currituck Lighthouse to see if the keepers will share any candy. Cross the haunted bridge to knock on the doors of Whalehead, which is reportedly haunted, to see if tricks or treats await. Take a haunted hayride around the village, then visit the residents of Corolla, who host a trunk or treat event here each year on Halloween.

3. Outer Banks Halloween Parade of Costumes – Kill Devil Hills

Date: Sunday, October 28th

Time: 2:00 pm

Best For: Family Fun

This is Halloween, everybody make a scene. This free, family-friendly costume event has become increasingly popular in Kill Devil Hills over the past five years. Starting and ending at Aviation Park, the event begins with a Halloween party and trick or treating around the turtle pond. At 3:00 pm, costumed participants walk approximately a half mile through several spectator zones. Prizes are awarded for the best costumes. Be sure to register prior to the parade to be eligible for one of the impressive prizes donated by local businesses.

4. Halloween Party and Costume Contest at The Roadside – Duck

Date: Saturday, October 27th

Time: 5:00 pm

Best For: Adult and Older Kid Fun

Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble. Or the grill in this case. $20 will get you all the grilled oysters you can eat at The Roadside’s Halloween bash. Spooky cocktails are on tap for this 21 and over costume party. The Roadside is known for having the best backyard parties in the town of Duck.

5. The Beer Witch Project Beer Run and Margarita Monster Mile at Outer Banks Brewing Station – Kill Devil Hills

Date: Tuesday, October 30th

Time: 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Best For: Adult and Older Kid Fun

Drink, run, repeat 3 times, PARTY! Adults 21 and older in their best Halloween costume can participate in this social run, with a legendary backyard party at the Outer Banks Brewing Station afterward. Awards are given for the scariest and most creative costumes. Howling at the moon is optional.

6. Wanchese Woods Slaughter Swamp and Mr. Jingles Playhouse – East Lake

Date: Friday, October 26th, Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 29th

Time: From dark to 11:00 pm (Friday & Saturday), From dark until 10:00 pm (Sunday)

Best For: Adult and Older Kid Fun

It’s close to midnight and something evil’s lurking from the dark. Wanchese Woods is the place to go to be scared silly this Halloween. Located approximately 30 minutes inland from Nags Head, down a dark, desolate stretch of highway, visitors to Wanchese Woods report that it’s well worth the drive. East Lake Township is home to the true ghost town of Buffalo City, an abandoned moonshine and logging town located deep in the swamp. So this place is pretty scary on its own, even when the monsters and creepy clowns aren’t around.

7. Trick or Treat Night Presented by First Flight Elementary School

Date: Saturday, October 27th

Time: 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Best For: Family Fun

Put on your best costume and trick or treat in the halls! Admission to this all ages family-friendly event is $2 per person plus a non-perishable food item for the Beach Food Pantry. Trick-or-treating is included in the entry fee, and tickets available for other activities, like the cake walk, photo booth sponsored by Five Fish Photography, and crafts. And new this year: a glow party in the Disco Dungeon! Food is available for purchase as well.
