KDH Lifesaving Station Corolla Village

Kill Devil Hills Lifesaving Station

Built in 1878, the Kill Devil Hills Life Saving Station was one of eleven stations erected along the Outer Banks at the turn of the century. Life Saving Station #13 was located on the oceanfront in Kill Devil Hills to the east of what is now the Wright Brothers Memorial. Relying on the bravery of local volunteers, the Life Saving Service responded to the frequent shipwrecks off the coast. The station was purchased by the Twiddy family in 1986 and moved to its current location in Corolla, where it was restored.
