A Rare Sight for the Outer Banks
Leatherbacks do visit North Carolina waters, but seeing one come ashore to nest is a much different story.
This nesting was especially remarkable because, according to N.E.S.T (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles), the last known leatherback nesting on the Outer Banks was in 2009.
The turtle spent the early morning hours completing her nest before beginning the long trek back toward the ocean. As word spread, a number of people were fortunate enough to witness the incredible sight. And, importantly, they gave her the space she needed.
Rather than crowding around the turtle, people kept their distance and quietly watched as the exhausted mother made her way across the sand.
That’s one of the most special things about moments like this on the Outer Banks: sometimes the best way to experience wildlife is simply to stand back and let nature happen.
